Alumnae Memorials
Celebrate the Life of a Peace College Alumna
Peace College is pleased to provide the James Dinwiddie Chapel for use by families of deceased Peace College alumnae for celebrations of life. To arrange an alumna’s memorial service, please contact Rebecca Leggett, Director of the Office of Visitor Services, at (919) 508-2044 or rleggett@peace.edu.
Eligibility:
To hold a memorial service at Peace, the deceased must be an alumna of the college, a faculty member, an employee, a retired faculty member, or a retired employee of long standing. Under extraordinary circumstances, the administration may make an exception to the policy. Specific details follow below.
The Service:
Any memorial service in the Dinwiddie Chapel must be scheduled with the Director of Visitor Services. The Director of Visitor Services will consult with Peace staff and administration to determine if eligibility requirements are met and will give priority to such memorial service requests whenever possible.
Due to campus staffing and facility restrictions, funeral services where the body is present either in a casket or cremated remains in an urn are not permitted on campus.
Scheduling
Peace College will permit a memorial service (where the body or cremated remains are not present) to be held in the Dinwiddie Chapel. Such services are difficult to plan in advance with regards to parking, security, student events and other College needs. Because of the many activities that take place on the Peace College campus and limited parking facilities, Peace discourages scheduling memorial services during the week when classes are in session. In all cases, scheduled weddings will take priority.
The College will reserve two hours for memorial services: forty-five minutes to set up and for guest arrival before the start time of the service, and 1 hour for the actual service and receiving of friends after the service, if desired.
Officiant and Music
The family of the deceased selects clergy and works directly with the College’s organist, Ms. Jennie Vance, on musical selections. Ms. Virginia Vance provides music for memorial services upon advance request. When unavailable, she will advise the name of an alternate organist from our list of those trained to perform on the delicate and historic instrument. Please contact Ms. Vance directly at 508-2296 to discuss her availability and fee schedule.
Peace College Chamber Singers – Should the family wish to involve the services of the Chamber Singers in the memorial service, they will need to contact Mr. James Smith, Associate Professor of Music, at (919) 508-2354 or jsmith@peace.edu .
Decorations
If the family wishes to have flowers displayed in the Chapel at the time of the service, flowers may be delivered to the Chapel no earlier than one hour before the start time of the memorial service. The family will assume all related charges and responsibility for ordering, delivery, and removal of flowers from the Chapel immediately following the service or Peace College will retain the deposit.
Fees & Liability
The fee for use of Dinwiddie Chapel is $350, payable upon issuance of the contract in advance of the service date.
The family assumes all liability for its guests and service providers while on the Peace campus, and will be responsible for all aspects of the service including the protection of campus facilities, furnishings and grounds.
Receiving Lines and Reception Space
Family may receive friends immediately after the memorial service in the adjacent room, Blue Parlor.
Use of other spaces on campus, such as Main Parlor for a reception or greeting space incurs a fee of $250. If food and beverage are desired, the Director of Visitor Services will assist the family with those arrangements, which are made with the College’s caterer, ARAMARK dining services, exclusively. Food and beverage expenses and associated sales tax will be sent by invoice following the service to the specified family member.
Memorial Gifts
If the family would like their friends and loved ones to donate gifts to Peace College in memory of the deceased, the family should contact the Director of Gift Planning, Karen Nolan at (919) 508-2042 or knolan@peace.edu. The family will receive notification of all memorial gifts to the college from family and friends.
