Presidential Tribute
Laura Carpenter Bingham ’77
9th President
On Monday, September 21, 2009, President Bingham announced her plans for retirement scheduled for the end of this academic year. Knowing our alumnae and friends would want to wish her Bon Voyage and happy retirement, we created this forum to give you an opportunity to send her well wishes and us ideas on how you would like to pay tribute to the 9th President of Peace.

From her first years, she was one of the country’s youngest college presidents, having begun serving at age 41. She is currently the third longest-serving private college president in North Carolina (and has served longer than all but one of the 16 UNC campus chancellors!). Along the way, President Bingham and First Man Warren Bingham have given all they had to give – joyfully immersing themselves in the people and place of Peace since 1998.
By the time June rolls around, President Bingham will have completed twelve years of dedicated service to Peace, her students, alumnae and friends. In the mean time, she plans to continue her work for Peace, intending to give the same energy, spirit and buoyancy she has given over the past eleven years. The Trustees will soon be giving their careful attention to the search process for the President’s successor, while President Bingham will assuredly continue to be in close contact with the Peace community throughout this year updating us on Peace progress.
Help us Honor President Bingham!

“President Bingham is a dynamic leader for Peace College who immersed herself in its life and mission. She has firmly established the college as a baccalaureate institution of choice for young women and has attracted an outstanding team of faculty and administrators who will keep the college moving forward in the years to come.” ~ Peace College Board of Trustees Chair Todd Robinson
“President Bingham has been a remarkable role model, not only for our current students, but for all alumnae. There is a tremendous feeling of gratitude to Laura for the accomplishments and strides she has brought to Peace through her excellent leadership.” ~ Peace College Board of Trustees Vice Chair and former Alumnae Association President Beth Cherry of Wilmington
“When I think about Peace College, President Bingham immediately comes to mind. From move-in day to the final weeks leading up to graduating, she has always been such an important part of our campus. I recently went to see her receive the Triangle Business Journal Lifetime Achievement Award and I remember her saying that her mother had always been her personal cheerleader. Well, President Bingham has always been our personal cheerleader – strengthening and empowering us for our next steps. It has been a true honor to know and work with her and she will be greatly missed.” ~ Peace College Student Government President Mary Kathryn Willis
“President Bingham has been an outstanding leader for Peace College and for the sector of private higher education in North Carolina and nationally. She is highly respected by her peers for the success she has achieved at Peace and for her ideas about ways to address the challenges facing higher education.” ~ Hope Williams, president of North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities
