Lucy Cooper Finch Library Breaks Ground

October 17, 2008

Alumnae and friends gathered on Friday, October 17, 2008, to officially break ground on the Lucy Cooper Finch Library renovation and expansion project. President Bingham ’77, members of the Board of Trustees, Alumnae Board, Board of Visitors, Foundation Board, and several project donors were present for the celebratory moment.

A centerpiece of the Promise of Peace Campaign is the vision for a “Contemporary Campus” that will propel Peace into a more competitive position to recruit and retain high quality students through the renovation of a number of existing facilities, of which the renovation and expansion of the Lucy Cooper Finch Library is the highest priority.

To meet the rising needs and expectation of our 21st century learners and to continue to provide the high quality of education that Peace is known for, it is imperative that we seamlessly integrate technology and technical support to enhance student learning. Peace is fortunate to have a stable and central structure in its current Library, one that can be updated in ways that will have a profound impact on the entire campus and on the teaching and learning that is at the core of its liberal arts emphasis.

The renovation and expansion of the Lucy Cooper Finch Library will create a space that leverages traditional print-based resources with those available through technology. It will provide group study rooms, fully equipped presentation rooms, and will become a central hub for learning services, information technology, and library resources.

With increasing needs for collaborative learning space, technology requirements, and to meet the needs of how today’s students learn, upgrades and spatial renovations and an addition must be made to the Library. The architect estimates that the total cost of these renovations and technological improvements will be $3.7 million.

The College and Promise of Peace Campaign volunteers are actively working to raise funds for this project. As of October 17, 2008, $2.66 million has been committed. The outstanding balance is being sought from alumnae, businesses, foundations, and private donors.
